When talking about my trip to Curacao, I realized that a lot of Americans have never heard of this island country. And many of those who have visited were mostly cruisers. When I told the TSA agents at customs in the Miami Airport that I was returning from Curacao, his response was “where on Earth is Curacao“. I thought, if even a TSA agent in Miami has never heard of this island in the Caribbean Sea, then it must be off the radar for many Americans. If you are unaware of what this Caribbean island has to offer, here are 5 reasons to convince you to make Curacao your next beach vacation.
5 Reasons to Plan a Curacao Beach Vacation
Beautiful Weather
Due to its’ location near the equator, the temperature in Curacao doesn’t fluctuate much. The temperature stays in the 80s year-round. That means it’s always perfect beach weather! While it is warm enough to go swimming, it isn’t too hot for exploring.
The climate is sunny and dry in Curacao. The island receives only 21.6 inches of rainfall per year. So you don’t have to worry about rain ruining your time in paradise. When it does rain, it is usually showers that pass quickly.
Curacao is a part of the ABC islands (along with Aruba and Bonaire) of the Caribbean. These islands are located below the hurricane belt, meaning that the potential of a hurricane is extremely unlikely. You don’t have to worry about hurricane season deterring you from visiting this Caribbean island.
Colorful Willemstad
While I could spend a whole week soaking up the sun at the beach, it is nice to have the option of visiting a nearby town or city while on a beach vacation. Willemstad is the colorful capital city of Curacao and provides a change in scenery from the beach.
Willemstad’s colorful streets are a delight to stroll through. These colorful buildings house shops, restaurants, houses, and hotels. There is plenty to do in Willemstad to keep you busy including checking out the Floating Market, Queen Emma bridge, and For Amsterdam.

Ease for American Tourists
One of the top reasons to make Curacao your next beach vacation is its’ ease for American tourists. There are three reasons why Curacao is so easy for American tourists, the language, currency, and location.
There are three official languages in Curacao including Dutch, Papiamentu (the local language), and English. This makes it extremely easy for Americans to communicate as almost everyone on the island speaks English.
The official currency in Curacao is the Netherlands Antillean guilder. However, the American dollar is circulated freely. Most hotels and restaurants will have prices listed in both the Netherlands Antillean guilder and the American dollar. I didn’t have any issues using the American dollar or my credit card during my trip.
Lastly, the location makes Curacao an ideal vacation spot for American tourists. While it is a bit farther than other Caribbean islands, its’ location below the hurricane belt makes it worth the trip. There are direct flights from New York City, Miami, and Charlotte making traveling to Curacao very accessible.
