The Finger Lakes is one of the best regions in New York for waterfall hopping. Scratch that, in my opinion, the Finger Lakes is one of the best regions in the world to see waterfalls. This region is known for its 11 glacial lakes, deep gorges, and waterfalls. There are over 1,000 waterfalls in the Finger Lakes region. The Finger Lakes waterfalls range from well-known waterfalls in state parks to lesser-known local gems.
It can be a bit overwhelming to decide which waterfalls to visit in the Finger Lakes. There are so many incredible waterfalls that it’s hard to decide where to start. Yet, I’m here to help! After countless trips to the Finger Lakes, I’ve become rather knowledgeable about this region. I have visited the Finger Lakes multiple times, finding new waterfalls on each trip and revisiting some of my favorites.
This guide breaks down the best Finger Lakes Waterfalls. There is no particular order for this list, each of these New York State Park and waterfalls has its own appeal.
Keep in mind, that this list is a starting point to inspire your trip to the Finger Lakes, highlighting the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. Unless you spend an entire week in the Finger Lakes, you will likely not be able to see all the waterfalls listed below on one trip. I put together a 3-4 day Finger Lakes Waterfall Itinerary that allows you to visit the best waterfalls over a long weekend getaway.

How Many Waterfalls are in the Finger Lakes
There are countless waterfalls in the Finger Lakes region. The Finger Lakes is home to over 1,000 waterfalls. You simply cannot visit them all, especially because many are on private property. That is where this list comes in handy. This list highlights the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes so you know where to begin while exploring this region. If you want to explore further, I’ll be working on some guides that cover some lesser-known waterfalls as well.
Best Time to Visit the Finger Lakes Waterfalls
The best time to visit the Finger Lakes to chase waterfalls is from late May until mid-November. Many of the gorge trails in the Finger Lakes are only open seasonally, so if you want to see them, you will want to plan your visit when those trails are accessible. While some of the gorge trails might open earlier depending on the year, if you plan your trip in advance, a good rule of thumb is to plan your visit after Memorial Day.
If you are planning a multi-day trip to the Finger Lakes to visit the waterfalls, you should plan your trip from late Spring to early Fall. Most of the gorge trails at these New York State Parks are closed in the Winter. Winter would not be an ideal time to visit if you want to visit Watkins Glen State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, and Robert H. Treman State Park.
If you are in the region during the winter, you can visit Taughannock State Park and Letchworth State Park. Remember that snow can be heavy in the winter, and inclement weather could deter you. Albeit cold, both of these parks are beautiful in the Winter!
If waterfall swimming is on your bucket list, be sure to plan your visit in the summer so you can swim at the epic waterfall-fed pool in Robert H. Treman State Park.
There are a few other factors to consider when planning a trip to the Finger Lakes, including rainfall, weather, and crowds.
If the summer has been dry, many of the waterfalls, such as Taughannock Falls, will appear less impressive due to the lack of water flow.
How to Get to the Waterfalls in the Finger Lakes
The best way to see the waterfalls in the Finger Lakes is by car. You will need a car with you to explore this region and visit the various waterfalls on this list. A car will also allow you to explore everything the Finger Lakes offers.
To reach the waterfalls in the Finger Lakes, plan on hiking. While a few of these waterfalls can be viewed from a parking lot, including Taughannock Falls and Shequaga Falls, you must hike to most of the Finger Lakes waterfalls.
P.S. I am not a skilled hiker, yet I find that most of the waterfall hikes on this list fall in the easy to moderate level of difficulty. As long as you have some fitness level, you should be able to do all of the trails on this list.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes! These 15 stunning waterfalls will inspire you to book a trip to the Finger Lakes, if you haven’t already!
Watkins Glen State Park
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most well-known waterfalls in the Finger Lakes, and for good reason. The Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen follows 19 waterfalls, ultimately leading you to Rainbow Falls, the most iconic and photographed spot in the park. Visually speaking, Watkins Glen is perhaps one of the most photogenic gorge trails in the Finger Lakes. Experience-wise, hiking at Watkins Glen is one of the most fun experiences; not only do you get to see the waterfalls along the gorge trail, but you also get to walk beneath veil-like waterfalls along your hike.
Keep in mind that due to its popularity, Watkins Glen State Park is one of the busiest in the Finger Lakes. The trail can become congested in the summer, especially in the afternoons when tour buses come through. Try to visit this park in the early morning or during the shoulder seasons.

Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park is one of my favorite places to see waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. Known as the Grand Canyon of the East, Letchworth State Park feels very grand and different from the other waterfalls in the Finger Lakes.
While there are hiking trails, you don’t need to hike to see the major waterfalls in this park and won’t miss any iconic views driving. You can take a breathtaking scenic drive through the park, stopping at the waterfalls along the way. It is a relaxing way to see waterfalls year-round. Plus, the waterfalls flowing into the deep gorge are stunning.
Visit the three major waterfalls of this park: Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. And don’t miss the view from Inspiration Point! This is one of the most incredible waterfall views in the Finger Lakes.

Taughannock Falls at Taughannock State Park
This single-drop waterfall is 215 feet high, making it the tallest waterfall in New York State. Visiting Taughannock State Park is an easy addition to any Finger Lakes waterfall road trip. The overview and hiking trail are just a quick detour off the main road.
You can get a view of Taughannock Falls from the drive-up overlook. This viewpoint gives you a sense of how tall Taughannock Falls is. After seeing Taughannock Falls from above, follow an easy 2-mile out-and-back trail to see this Finger Lakes waterfall from below.
Taughannock Falls is a Finger Lake waterfall you can visit year-round, making it great to visit no matter the season.

Upper Falls at Taughannock State Park (AKA the Hidden Waterfall)
Not many visitors know about a “hidden” waterfall at Taughannock Falls State Park. Though Upper Falls at Toughannock Falls State Park is quite easy to access, it is often overlooked.
To see Upper Falls, continue driving up the road from the Toughannock Falls Overlook. You’ll find the Upper Parking Lot up the hill. The waterfall is only a short walk from the parking area. An old railroad bridge crosses the gorge, where you can see the waterfall from above.
Unfortunately, there is no way to access the base of the waterfall. But the view from above is spectacular!

Lucifer Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park
There are so many reasons to visit Robert H. Treman State Park. The gorge trail left me speechless; the stairs followed a peaceful glen until suddenly you are cliffside overlooking Lucifer Falls below and a staircase leading down the side of the gorge. Not only is this one of the most beautiful parks in the Finger Lakes, but I also found the gorge trail to be one of the least trafficked ones I’ve hiked.
Robert H. Treman State Park is one where I suggest doing both the Gorge Trail and the Rim Trail. The Rim Trail offers a beautiful view of Lucifer Falls that you won’t see from the Gorge Trail.

Enfield Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park
While Lucifer Falls is the most dramatic waterfall at Robert H. Treman State Park, don’t miss visiting Enfield Falls. Enfield Falls is not along the Gorge Trail at Robert H. Treman State Park, so you will miss this waterfall if you are hiking. Enfield Falls is worth a stop at any time of the year. However, visiting this Finger Lakes waterfall is especially worthwhile in the Summer.
In the summer, Lower Enfield Falls at Robert H. Treman State Park is transformed into a waterfall-fed pool for swimming! This is one of the best swimming holes in New York State and is such a fun way to spend a hot day.

Buttermilk Falls State Park
While most of the waterfalls in Buttermilk Falls State Park are small compared to other waterfalls in the Finger Lakes, it is one of the most peaceful and beautiful. It has a very ethereal vibe to it. I felt like I was in a fairytale land walking through this park (similar to Watkins Glen, yet much more peaceful). Along the gorge trail, the water cascades smoothly past plunge pools. The color of the pools ranges in shades of bluish-green depending on the depths of the water.
Like Robert H. Treman State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park boasts a waterfall swimming pool in the summer. This pool is at the base of the largest waterfall in the park that gently cascades into the pool.

Stony Brook State Park
Stony Brook State Park features three major waterfalls, which are some of the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. All three waterfalls can be found along the Gorge Trail at Stony Brook. This gorge trail is fairly easy compared to the other gorge trails in the region, meaning that people of varying fitness levels can appreciate these beautiful waterfalls. As you continue along the Gorge Trail in Stony Brook State Park, the waterfalls seem to become more and more impressive.
One of the best parts about Stony Brook State Park is that it seems very underrated. You won’t find as many crowds on the trails as you would in Ithaca and Watkins Glen. In addition to the stunning waterfalls, there is also a roped-off swimming area. There’s nothing quite like taking a dip in a natural swimming hole after seeing waterfalls.

Grimes Glen
Grimes Glen is one of the more unique spots to see waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. Located in Naples, NY, this park doesn’t have as much infrastructure as some of the others in the region. And while most of the waterfalls listed prohibit going in the water, Grimes Glen actually encourages visitors to wade through the creek to see the waterfalls.
The first waterfall you will encounter at Grimes Glen cascades down a rock wall ending in the shallow creek. The second waterfall is an impressive 60-foot waterfall that ends in a plunge pool. This is truly one of the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes if you are looking for something that feels a bit more natural.

Filmore Glen State Park
Filmore Glen is a stunning state park with a long, narrow gorge where you can see five major waterfalls. Cowsheds Falls is the most popular waterfall in Filmore Glen State Park, yet all the waterfalls are simply stunning.
Fillmore Glen is a great place to see waterfalls in the Finger Lakes, as you can see various waterfalls in one park. With a 2.5-mile, out-and-back trail, Fillmore Glen Gorge Trail is one of the longest in the region. Yet, the trail is fairly easy and allows you to see various waterfalls.

Ithaca Falls
Ithaca Falls is a large roaring waterfall in the center of the city of Ithaca. This waterfall is a great additional waterfall to visit when you are exploring the various state parks in Ithaca. It’s easily accessible and makes a great stop for lunch. There is even a picnic area overlooking the waterfall.

Eagle Cliff Falls
Set between two rock walls flows the 40-foot-high Eagle Cliff Falls. This is by far one of the most underrated waterfalls I have visited in New York. You don’t need much time to visit Eagle Cliff Falls. However, several other waterfalls are located nearby, such as Watkins Glen State Park, to visit while checking out Eagle Cliff Falls.

Shequaga Falls
Shequaga Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. This waterfall is situated between two houses in the town of Montour Falls, New York. I couldn’t imagine having a waterfall practically in my backyard!
Shequaga Falls is easily accessible. You can walk up to the small park in town to see the waterfall.

Hector Falls
Hector Falls is an incredible roadside waterfall near Watkins Glen and is genuinely one of the best waterfalls in the Finger Lakes. This waterfall is stunning and worthwhile to visit; you don’t have to put much effort into seeing it. You can see Hector Falls while driving by or parking and get a closer look. If you leave your car, be careful, as it is along a road.
Another way to see Hector Falls is from Seneca Lake. The road where Hector Falls is located runs along the side of the lake. I had the most enchanting experience of seeing Hector Falls from a sunset sail with Sail True Love.

Carpenter Falls
Carpenter Falls is simply stunning, but it is not the easiest waterfall to get to in the Finger Lakes. This Finger Lakes waterfall is located in Marietta, NY, on the western side of Skaneateles Lakes.
Carpenter Falls is a stunning 90-foot waterfall that drops from a steep cliff overhang. It is incredibly picturesque. There are two options to see this waterfall; the Carpenter Falls Trail is a short, easy, .3-mile trail with a partial view of the waterfall. Yet, to see Carpenter Falls in all its glory, you must follow White Trail, a 2.9 moderate trail. The beginning of the trail starts with a steep climb where you will have to hold onto a rope. It is not easy, yet seeing this stunning waterfall in the Finger Lakes is worthwhile.

Where to Stay When Visiting the Waterfalls in the Finger Lakes
If your main goal when visiting the Finger Lakes is to see the waterfalls, I would suggest staying in either Ithaca or Watkins Glen. These are two of the most central towns in the Finger Lakes and are closest to the majority of the waterfalls on this list. If you’re staying for an extended time in the Finger Lakes, you could even stay a couple of nights in each location to have different scenery.
Ithaca
Ithaca is a small city at the base of Cayuga Lake. Home to both Cornel University and Ithaca College, Ithaca has more of a college town than a lakeside vibe, with a faster pace and many great bars and restaurants. This is the ideal place to stay if you want more food, beverages, and shopping options for entertainment after exploring the waterfalls.
Ithaca is home to three New York State Parks on this list: Robert H. Treman State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park, and Taughannock State Park. Additionally, you can discover other small waterfalls in Ithaca. Check out where to stay in Ithaca:

Watkins Glen
Watkins Glen State Park is located within the town of Watkins Glen and is nearby Montour Falls NY where you can find Shequaga Falls and Eagle Cliff Falls.
